Ma Lingli graduated from the Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts in 2012. She has a unique sensitivity to the touch between brush and silkl. She overstepped the established rules of traditional Chinese painting, using the characteristics of stenciled rendering but light and transparent, creating the effect of shadows and images against each other. Temporality and spatiality are the eternal issues of graphic painting. She disassembles a complete silk painting and places it on different acrylic planes. The shadow of the previous stencil falls on the edge of the next few sheets or between the pictures. Form a subtle sense of confusion, far and near, virtual and real, add more of a sense of volume and space to the final work.
Ma has prepared and considered the series of painting installations of the sea exhibited for several years. She photographed the seas around the world while traveling, then transformed her material into pieces of the sea in the works. This exhibiting piece is the first of the series and was specially created for this exhibition.
