Biography

Henry Chu is a Hong Kong–based tech artist. A graduate of the University of Auckland in Electrical and Computer Engineering, he founded the award-winning studio pill & pillow in 2004, earning accolades from Cannes Lions, the Webby Awards, and One Show.

Chu’s art harnesses data, music, and movement, and has been exhibited at major institutions including MoMA New York, and the Hong Kong Museum of Art. His interactive karaoke-inspired work Canto Cocktail (2020) was on display at M+ until June 2025, alongside his updated Time Clock (2005/2025), which explores the passage of time through the lens of television history.

At Digital Art Fair Asia (2021), he presented Blockchain Piano, which allowed visitors to purchase crypto through musical performance. In 2022, his installation SURIV at the University of Hong Kong transformed live Covid data into a gamified, immersive artwork.

In 2023, Chu was commissioned by Audemars Piguet, Bank of China, and the University of Hong Kong’s Faculty of Medicine to create digital works and installations. That same year, he collaborated with Ora-Ora, the Hong Kong Philharmonic, and composer Elliot Leung on visuals for the Metaverse Symphony.

At Ora-Ora, his exhibitions include Buds that May (2023) and A Digital Rhythm (2025). At Art Basel Hong Kong 2025, his project F(ear) and G(reed) transformed cryptocurrency market data into generative cello compositions, and at Art Basel 2026, his (A)bsurd & (D)istortion presented discordant live news through the medium of a guitar.
