Semper Femina

18 July - 20 August 2023
Overview
Ora-Ora is pleased to announce a group show of entirely female artists, comprising contributions from Peng Wei, Huang Dan, Zhang Yanzi and Nina Pryde. The title is “Semper Femina.”

Semper Femina  ̶  always, eternally a woman  ̶  explores issues that encapsulate the essence of womanhood, delving into the layered contours of femininity. It serves as a platform to amplify, celebrate and explore the unique qualities of women, unveiling a rich tapestry of experiences, emotions, and perspectives. The layered themes are rooted in the aesthetic of contemporary ink, spanning animation to collage and ink on paper.

The title is an abbreviated quotation from Book IV of “The Aeneid” by Roman epic poet Virgil (70 BC to 19BC). The full sentence, “Varium et mutabile semper femina” translates as “Woman is always a variable and changeable thing.” The exhibition ruminates not only on what it means to be female, but on the perceptions, judgments and limitations historically placed on women by wider society.

In the words of Ora-Ora co-founder and CEO, Henrietta Tsui-Leung, We have represented all four artists for several years, but have never before created a show anchored by their identity as women. This is an opportunity to celebrate the unique qualities of the female journey as a whole, through the subjective viewpoints of our artists as individuals.” Dr. Leung continued: “The path to unity and equality may lie in acknowledging and understanding differences.”
