The Reflection of Forgotten Things is a mesmerizing exploration of memory, duality, and the surreal nature of perception. It is a hauntingly beautiful meditation on memory, time, and the shifting nature of perception. The painting acts as a portal into the subconscious, where reflection—both literal and metaphorical—blurs the boundaries between reality and recollection.

The reflection is not purely identical—suggesting that memory is never perfect, and that the past exists in a state of distortion. The golden sun, positioned precisely between the two panels, serves as an anchor point, a celestial observer. A circular, clock-like symbol at the very centre of the composition—embedded in the floor—further emphasizes themes of time, cycles, and history. As in much of Thorpe’s work, the landscape is not purely external—it is a projection of an interior world. The presence of birds, sun, and time-related imagery suggests the impermanence of all things.

Stephen Thorpe was born in Margate, England in 1981. He received his MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art in London and was formerly a Professor of Painting at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in both Hong Kong and Atlanta. He is based in the Mojave Desert in Southern California.

Thorpe creates symbolic landscapes that occupy the threshold between the external world and the interior life of the mind. Drawing on psychology, mythology, folklore, philosophy, and the enduring power of archetypes, his paintings explore how memory, imagination, and perception shape our understanding of place. Mountains, caves, architectural fragments, decorative patterns, and framed vistas recur throughout the work as symbolic structures that invite reflection rather than description.
Working between representation and abstraction, Thorpe constructs spaces that feel simultaneously familiar and impossible. Materiality plays an equally significant role in the work. Smooth atmospheric passages coexist with heavily worked surfaces, exposed canvas, painted frames, and decorative borders, collapsing distinctions between image and object. The paintings continually negotiate opposing conditions: interior and exterior, permanence and impermanence, intimacy and vastness, representation and abstraction. Rather than resolving these tensions, they inhabit them, creating contemplative spaces where perception itself becomes the subject.

His art has been exhibited at venues including Saatchi Gallery, London, the National Museum, Gdansk, Poland, Summerhall, Edinburgh, the Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh, and Aberdeen Art Gallery in Scotland.

He has been the recipient of numerous prizes, including the Basil H. Alkazzi Foundation Scholarship, Saatchi’s Showdown Prize, and the Royal Scottish Academy’s The Skinny Award.
