The Reflection of Forgotten Things is a mesmerizing exploration of memory, duality, and the surreal nature of perception. It is a hauntingly beautiful meditation on memory, time, and the shifting nature of perception. The painting acts as a portal into the subconscious, where reflection—both literal and metaphorical—blurs the boundaries between reality and recollection.

The reflection is not purely identical—suggesting that memory is never perfect, and that the past exists in a state of distortion. The golden sun, positioned precisely between the two panels, serves as an anchor point, a celestial observer. A circular, clock-like symbol at the very centre of the composition—embedded in the floor—further emphasizes themes of time, cycles, and history. As in much of Thorpe’s work, the landscape is not purely external—it is a projection of an interior world. The presence of birds, sun, and time-related imagery suggests the impermanence of all things.
