Liu Qi’s works often present the zen qualities of “stillness”, “control” and “calmness”. Liu Qi’s works often present the zen qualities of “stillness”, “control” and “calmness”. Using the hue blue as his main colour tone, its symbolism of “quiet” and “control” is consistent with these qualities.

The painting Love depicts a narrative of a long and lasting love. The protagonists within the painting are passionately in each other’s embrace, however the scene maintains a sense of calmness rather than exudes intensity. This deliberate adaptation is commonly seen within Liu’s works. In the process, he explores how figures have been represented over time and across different cultures. Wall paintings, reliefs, and sculptures from various past civilisations, such as Ancient Egypt and Han dynasty China, are all incorporated into Liu’s unique style, which transforms ancient concepts and systems of figuration into a contemporary cultural icon by depicting scenes of daily life through Chinese ink.
