HALLEY CHENG
Halley Cheng’s combination of irreverence grounded in classical traditions, his blending, blurring and re-casting of ancient and modern, seasoned with an ethos of directness, honesty and enquiry, made him an immediate force on the Hong Kong arts scene. More recently he has tackled themes of social engagement and alienation at Art Basel Hong Kong and in his Twist/Turn show at Galerie Ora-Ora, both in 2017. He continually reaches into classical literature for inspiration. Cheng is able to combine classical motifs from imperial medical texts with what he describes as “dubious descriptions from the internet.” His ability to learn from the past without being enslaved by it is a matching tenet of our Screaming Books exhibition. In these works, Cheng takes this transformation of the encyclopaedia one step further by purposely concealing the text, to reveal the power of images.
He was educated at school and at university in Hong Kong, graduating in Fine Arts from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2008, obtaining a master’s degree in Visual Arts, Studio and Extended Media from the Hong Kong Baptist University five years later. His works have been collected by institutions such as The Philippe Charriol Foundation and Bank of China (Hong Kong) Private Banking.
