by Galerie Ora-Ora on April 20, 2010

Every year since 2008, internationally renowned Chinese artist Huang Yongyu makes a bronze sculpture of the year’s animal sign. 2010 is the year of the Tiger, and his new creation, auspiciously named “Fortune Tiger” symbolizes a blessing of joy and prosperity.
The “Fortune Tiger” is a bronze sculpture limited to 1000 editions, and it is the third in Huang’s Animal Sculpture Series.

The press launch of Huang Yongyu’s “Fortune Tiger” took place 28th December, 2009, at Beijing Hotel, China. When asked of why he created the sculpture, Huang answered that the Chinese animal zodiac is a significant part of the nation’s tradition and culture, and like the rest of China, he enjoys making something auspicious to welcome and make wishes for the new year. The painting in the background is his new animal painting, also taking the auspicious animal, the tiger. The tiger sits in front of a house and guards it from bad fortune and evil spirits, symbolizing security for the new year.

Huang Yongyu is particularly fond of animals. In 2008 Huang created the sculpture “Happy Rat” to celebrate the auspicious coincidence of his 84th birthday, the year of the Rat which is his own birth sign and Beijing being the host of the Olympic Games. It was the incredible popularity of the “Happy Rat” that inspired Huang to begin the Animal Sculpture Series, something which he enjoys very much and is happy to see that it brings other people a great sense of joy and fun.
