Huang Haifei

Huang Haifei’s art is marked by her incorporation of her handmade stamps into compositions that resemble traditional Chinese landscape paintings. Her art revolves around reality, illusion and virtual reality. Beyond the appearance of old and yellowed maps, the paintings illustrate the artist’s interiority, while begging the questions: what is real and what is a fantasy?

Artist Statement
Every time I stamp is like to project some other life—although the stamp itself remains the same, the images that appear on the paper are hardly the same (due to many things, such as the pressure applied, the texture of the paper, the amount of ink). It is like how many living creatures are highly similar and share many common characteristics, but the living environment shapes all creatures differently. This is why I have decided to include my stamps into my artwork.
